APPLY
A CLOAK PIN

People often refer to this type of Cloak Pin as the 'Tara Brooch'. The pin is actually called a 'Penannular Brooch' or an 'Annular Fibula' (ring brooch) and was used to fasten garments.
Ironically, the famous Tara Brooch appeared to have been a pseudo-penannular with its purpose being purely decorative.

We are often asked how a cloak pin is applied.
To start with, you need a woollen garment or loosely woven tweed.
The purpose of the pin is to hold a scarf or cloak in place, but it can also simply be worn as a brooch on a woollen jumper. The following pictures demonstrate how the pin is applied.

Push the pin approx. 1 inch through the garment,
less in case of a scarf or cloak, since you have to put it through two layers.
Applying a cloak pin step 1
Line up the opening of the round part with the pin.
Applying a cloak pin step 2
Bring the pin forward...

...and twist the round part of the pin downward.
Applying a cloak pin step 4
Do take care to apply the pin in a manner that you
don't injure yourself with the pointy end of the pin.

Remember, you are not allowed to board a plane wearing this pin.
The ould Celts had no problems in that respect.

And please keep out of reach of children.
